One of the strains on mental health in the South Asian community is the pressure of being a “model minority”. In her dissertation research, Alliance Affiliate Shanta Kanukollu set out to understand how this stereotype might affect South Asian clients’ understanding and desire to share experiences of trauma. Recently interviewed for the MannMukti podcast(MannMukti translates to mental liberation in Hindi), Shanta discusses her research findings, as well as the importance of improving access to mental health treatment for the South Asian community. An affiliate of Alliance since 2017, Shanta has a keen interest in working with individuals of color who may experience stress related to marginalization, acculturation, intergenerational conflict, and family dynamics.
Launched in May 2017, MannMukti is an organization that aims to encourage healthy, open dialogue of mental health issues in the South Asian community in an effort to remove stigma, improve awareness and promote self-care. Find out more at mannmukti.org
